Agronomy

Mr. Narayan Nibe , IC Programme Coordinator/ SMS Agronomy , KVK Dahigaon

Agronomy is the science that deals with scientific management and production technology in crop production particularly referring to cereals, pulses, oil seeds, forage and fodder crops. It also deals with crop improvement related works. In addition, studies relating to weed management, crop eco physiology, Integrated Nutrient Management, soil and water conservation and management also comes under the broad subject Agronomy.
Agronomy encompasses work in the areas of plant genetics, plant physiology, meteorology, and soil science. Agronomists today are involved in developing models for Good Agriculture Practices (GAP), Climate resilient agriculture, precision farming, and crop ideotype concept.

Scope:
Food grain production in India has increased significantly after the introduction of varieties which are agronomically superior, short in duration, dwarf cum lodging resistant and diseases and pest resistant, which thrive well in diverse ago ecological conditions. Varieties suitable to biotic and abiotic stresses are developed by agronomists and crop breeders which enhances the production potential of a particular crop. The efficiency of the crop can be enhanced by adopting precision farming models and site specific nutrient management technique. Water use efficiency is optimised by adopting the methods like drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, mulching, fertigation in agronomic crops. Soil Test based Crop Response (STCR) is practiced in agromony which deals with the fertilization schedule and method of application based on the soil testing.
